What is Written Out Loud?
Written Out Loud was founded by Joshua Shelov, a successful Hollywood filmmaker and adjunct Professor at Yale.
In building WOL, Joshua tapped into a key learning from his film making days. Writers in Hollywood don’t work alone - and they don’t start with typing. They start with their voices, sharing ideas and building stories out loud, as a team. This “campfire-style” process then jet-fuels the writing phase that follows.
To inspire joyful writing in your students, begin with collaborative out loud storytelling.
Writing with joy flows out of meaningful human connection. That’s the essence of the Written Out Loud methodology.
Have a child start writing by building a story with a team, and they can literally write a published book.
